Edge of Tomorrow

Look, I freely admit it. I love Tom Cruise. His movies do something for me most of the time. Whether he is a secret agent or a regular guy, I like his movies. (Except for Rock of Ages. I did not like that one.) So of course I am going to see Edge of Tomorrow the first chance I get.

After seeing it, I can say that this might be one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. His character in this film is a little bit Jerry Maguire who has to become an amalgam of Ethan Hunt/Jack Reacher. Through a series of events, he gains the power to always wake up at the same point any time he dies. Think of it like a very violent Groundhog Day. When you add in the stunning Emily Blunt, the versatile Brendan Gleeson, and the Bill Paxton-ish Bill Paxton, you have a formula for a fun movie. Plus squid-like aliens and mech-suits?

This movie won’t get any major awards. It should however get your money. It is not only exciting but also fun. Tom Cruise is best when he is smiling and not playing things super serious which is exactly how he is in this movie. Edge of Tomorrow is the perfect summer sci-fi movie. The science element is there but not explored enough to worry about or get in the way.

The film is directed by Doug Liman. Mr. Liman also gave us the first Bourne movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Swingers. (Of course he was also responsible for Jumper…so there’s that.)

WIthout giving away any spoilers, I will say that the only complaint that I had with the movie is the Hollywood ending. Not having read the Manga that the movie is based on, All You Need is Kill, I cannot say if the story matches between the two. I do recommend the movie though.

If I had to nit-pick about this movie, it would be around the 3D. The 3D does not add anything to this movie. It did not really take anything away, but it felt unnecessary.

On a scale of one being the worst and 5 being the best, I give this movie a solid four and a half couch jumps.
