d20 Legendary Challenge

You probably don’t know this about me, but I am big into tabletop roleplaying games. I am also a host on a podcast that discusses tabletop RPGs, as well as geek culture. I created the following challenge based on another similar one out there. I did this one because the other one, well… sucked. So here it is. The d20 Legendary Challenge.

The d20 Legendary Challenge

Each number represents a side of your favorite geometric shape, the icosahedron. Each day, answer the question. At the end of 20 days, roll a 20-sided die and perform the challenge associated with that number. Record your results for posterity.

  1. Question: How did you get your start in tabletop roleplaying games?
Challenge: Find a friend who does not play. Convince them to try it just one time.
  2. Question: What is your preferred character persuasion? (I.E. human, elf, werewolf, cyborg, etc.)
Challenge: The next opportunity you have, play a character persuasion that you have never or rarely played.
  3. Question: What is your preferred character type? (I.E. brawler, wizard, thief, hacker, etc.)
Challenge: The next opportunity you have, play a character type that you have never or rarely played.
  4. Question: What is your favorite setting? (I.E. urban fantasy, high fantasy, science fiction, horror, etc.)
Challenge: Pick up a novel written in a setting with which you are unfamiliar. Read it from start to finish.
  5. Question: What is your favorite rules system? (I.E. World of Darkness, d20, Savage Worlds, West End Star Wars, etc.)
Challenge: Pick up a rules system with which you are unfamiliar. Learn and playtest.
  6. Question: Do you prefer to play or run games?
Challenge: If you have never run a game, give it a shot. If you prefer to play, but frequently run, bribe your current GM with their favorite food. If you are the current GM, implement a reward system for receiving bribes from your players.
  7. Question: What is your favorite character you’ve ever played?
Challenge: If you are the current GM, introduce your favorite character as an NPC into the plot of the story. If you are a player, introduce your favorite character into your current character’s back story. If the character is crossing genres (going from Fantasy to Science Fiction for example), make reasonable adjustments to make them fit.
  8. Question:  Who or what is your all-time favorite villain from a game in which you either played or ran?
Challenge: If you are the current GM, introduce your favorite villain into the plot of the story. If you are a player, introduce your favorite villain into your current character’s back story. If the villain is crossing genres (going from Fantasy to Science Fiction for example), make reasonable adjustments to make them fit.
  9. Question: What is your favorite character played by someone else?
Challenge: Find that person and tell them why you think their character is awesome. Congratulate them for their brilliance.
  10. Question: What is a character that you have always wanted to play, but never have had the opportunity?
Challenge: At the first opportunity, build and play that character.
  11. Question: What is a character that you have played, and vowed never to play again… and why?
Challenge: Revisit that character and find a way to rebuild them in such a way that they will be playable to you again.
  12. Question: What is the funniest moment you have ever witnessed in game?
Challenge: Write, record, or video a reenactment of that moment and post it on your favorite social network or forum board.

Challenge: Write, record, or video a reenactment of that moment and post it on your favorite social network or forum board.
  14. Question: What is craziest moment you have ever witnessed in game? (IE the character who always fails his rolls succeeds at a dramatically critical moment)
Challenge: Write, record, or video a reenactment of that moment and post it on your favorite social network or forum board.
  15. Question: What type of tabletop RPG experience do you prefer? (IE hack & slash, talk about your feelings, political intrigue)
Challenge: Find a game at your local gaming shop that fits under a different category than you usually play and ask to join.
  16. Question: What one piece of equipment do you make certain ALL of your characters have and why?
Challenge: Do away with that piece of equipment for one character and see what happens.
  17. Question: Do you consider yourself to have good dice luck, bad dice luck, or are you statistically marginalized into somewhere in the middle?
Challenge: Find a gaming system that is dice-less and see if your luck changes.
  18. Question: Do a fast and loose recap of the best game you ever played in. Name names and point fingers!
Challenge: Analyze, if only to yourself, why this game was so awesome. Take stock of those elements and try to reintroduce them into your current or future games.
  19. Question: Do you fast and loose recap of the worst game you ever played in. Do NOT name names and do NOT point fingers!
Challenge: Analyze, if only to yourself, why this game was so awful. Take careful note and make certain it does not happen again.

Challenge: Treat the GM to dinner. A good GM is hard to find!
